Does All You Can Eat Media Buffet Starve Authors?

Amazon Prime already threatens the media and entertainment world, with its free streaming of 41,000 movies and TV episodes and over 350,000 free Kindle books.  You pay an annual fee that averages out to peanuts per month, per item consumed.  Throw in free shipping on 15,000,000 items and you realize that all media is in trouble.

Recently, a new service debuted, Playster All-Media, which has not yet been adopted on a wide scale, but it’s only a matter of time for it or something like it to dominate along with Amazon.

Playster offers a variety of media for $24.95 per month – books, movies, TV, video games and music.  Or you can do individual media plans, such as books for $9.95 a month.  If you sign up for a year they’ll ship you a free HD tablet with headphones.

The all-you-can-eat mania is an awful model for the media but it looks like it has some sticking power.  We’re a monthly economy already. We have cable, phone, Internet, and other things that get paid on a monthly basis.  Why wouldn’t consumers add a service that allows them to download tons of music-books-movies?

Media companies need to stop participating in such schemes.  They will put themselves out of business otherwise.
